Watermelon Beads are believed to have been made in Venice Italy during the 1700-1800's and used in trading with the American natives.  They are usually a base color with colored stripes.  They obtained their name from the green bead with white stripes much like a large oblong shaped watermelon.  The white beads in this rosary have been referred to as white cross beads and were also trade beads.
